I use essential oils in my skincare routine and I find them to be fantastic. I use the top quality essential oil and not just anything that you can get off the shelf of a supermarket or pharmacy. If I don't have access to the top quality essential oils, I wouldn't use any at all. Essential oils are very powerful and all I need is one drop. You can read more about why I do this here.
The four essential oils that I regularly use in my skincare routine are:
1. lavender
2. manuka
3. juniper berry
4. tea tree
5. rose
Each one of these oils have different properties and I choose which one to use depending on the need of my skin on the day. Generally I use lavender when I don't have any major skin concerns that day, for example if I don't have any break outs or anything. Lavender is good for dry skin, reduce redness, helps wrinkles and fights any bacteria. I often add a drop of lavender oil and mix it in with my DIY kitchen face masks, for example, I would mix honey and yoghurt together with a drop of lavender oil.
I use manuka essential oil frequently now. I didn't know it existed because when I hear the word "manuka", I think of honey from New Zealand. The manuka oil comes from the manuka tree. It was one of the first oils that I received as one of Doterra's monthly promotion. I didn't want to open it for a long time because it came in a box and the whole packaging looked so luxurious. Anyway, eventually I opened it and I was very disappointed because it didn't smell nice. In fact, my husband said it smells like rotten wood (roll eyes moment!). However, I was curious to try and I was persistent in using it because it is good for my skin. After using it for a week or so, I felt my skin cleared up and the acne scars were clearing away. Manuka oil helps fight acne, so if I see something that's about to pop up on my skin, I apply a tiny bit of it and the next day or the day after it is gone.
Juniper berry smells fruity, woody and fresh. Doterra's juniper oil comes from the coniferous tree. It is not an oil that I was familiar with when I started using essential oils but it is excellent as a toner for the skin (but I don't think this means you put it all over your face like a normal "toner"). It can help redness and acne scars. It is also good for getting rid of acne but I tend to use manuka or tea tree for that.
Tea tree or melaleuca is excellent for any pimples. Tea tree is native to Australia and Australian aborigines have been using it for centuries as bush medicine. For my skin, manuka works for small pimples but if I get major bumpy ones, I put tea tree oil on it. I can feel straight away its antiseptic properties working on my skin but without burning it. Within two days, I can see and feel it shrinking away and disappear.
Rose is a luxurious oil. Doterra's rose oil comes in a roller bottle. I lightly roll on my face and I enjoy its floral fragrance. It is good for scars and making my skin soft.
How do I use them in my skincare routine? With these four oils, I apply them on my skin after I've applied eye cream but before the final moisturiser. I usually would apply them diluted on my skin but if I'm applying them on my skin after toner, essence, emulsion etc, I just apply neat. Lavender is usually safe to apply neat, but I'm very careful with other oils.
