One thing we all need to drink more is water! I think that many of us underestimate the power of water. I feel that often water alone can alleviate a headache, but most importantly water hydrates our skin and that's one of the keys to getting really nice skin. I feel you can put on various skincare products on your face, but without drinking water, you cannot hope to get Snowy Skin.
When I get up in the morning, the first thing I do is to drink some water. The water must be warm and preferably body temperature. I find this kick starts my digestive system. Sometimes I would add a little lemon or lime juice to the warm water and I drink a lot of water during the day.
Why do I drink warm water?
Cold water is great when the weather is warm, but I find that when I drink warm water, my body doesn't need to work hard to bring it to my body temperature. I also believe that drinking warm water especially after eating can help melt the fat away (as apposed to drinking cold water which solidifies the fat eaten).
It is very common in Asia to drink warm water all year round and you can even ask for it at restaurants without getting a funny look from the waiter. In fact, some places would ask you if you want cold or warm water. This is because Asians believe that warm water is better for the body.
One funny story is when I was in Seattle one year, I came down with a heavy cold. The hotel had NO kettle and it had a coffee machine. So I was making warm water from the coffee machine- eeewwww I know, now that I think back. Anyway, when I was at the hotel restaurant, they were serving me ice water. When I asked for warm water, the waiter must have thought I was crazy and it wasn't until I said "with slices of lemon and some honey please" did he start thinking I was normal!
So do I drink cold water?
Yes of course! When the weather is hot and I feel the heat, I drink cold water to cool down. But once I feel I have reached optimal temperature, I stop drinking cold water and drink warm water.
How much water do I drink a day?
The short answer to that is- as much as I can in the morning, a little less in the afternoon and only a bit in the evening. Ideally I'd like to drink at least 2 litres in the morning before I put any food in my stomach. I don't know why but this makes me feel I have cleaned my insides after sleeping and after the water, I then feel I'm ready to eat. It might sound weird but I think it is just a habit.
In the evening, I reduce my water intake but I have soup with my dinner. The soup I have is Cantonese style which is broth, watery consistent and completely opposite to the common pumpkin soup or creamy potato leek soup.
Cantonese style soup is delicious and extremely nutritious. I will be writing a separate article about it.
